Service Saturday Success

March 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Our service project for March was helping a local group build trails in Mt. Tabor Park, in Paulding County, GA. Velocity Church came out big for this afternoon project and taking the tools provided worked on several spots throughout the nearly 7 miles of trail potential being built. There was an expectation of achieving 100 man hours of labor on that Saturday, but we were able to kick it up a notch and log over 200 hours of labor. There were plenty of sore backs and tired legs from not just hiking into the woods to find the work spot on the trail, but then swinging rakes, hoes and shovels and picking up large rocks in our way. We began enthusiastically, but were grateful to hear the call for break time and even better–finish time. Still everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to April’s service project for Velocity Church. That project will be to clean up the trash along the road which our school, Baggett Elementary, resides.

We are looking to achieve some landscaping projects for needy families, working a booth at some car shows, help with parking and trash duty at our local July 4th celebrations and more. These projects not only positively affect our community, they also build relationships, between us and the community at large. Jesus came to serve and we choose to serve others in the name of Jesus.

Here is our group shot, taken after the work was done–and we are still smiling. Included in the picture are our two trail bosses who kept us on task and safe from danger.

Q+A Ask a Question:Get an Answer

March 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

q_aBe careful for what you ask for. We begin a new message series this Sunday simply called, Q+A.  We asked for your questions and promised answers for each question. All questions submitted so far are very well thought out, very intense and represent your heart and your desire to know more about God, His church and His being. And of course there is always the small print. And I have my own:

Often we ask the answer within the question we ask. That is we are prejudiced by our particular opinion before we ask the question. Maybe we want to set up the discussion and play the devil’s advocate. Perhaps we disagree with views often heard and need to see another view put forth. So in lieu of the above, be warned, the answers that are given might not be the answers you were looking to receive.

And also, sometimes the best answer to a question is “We just don’t know.” Some answers will only come when we have the chance to sit at the feet of our creator and seek the solution to the dilemma we pose. We can offer best guesses or reasonable assumptions, but our entire belief system is just that–a system of faith. There are some things we just have to exhibit an element of trust to understand.

Finally, some answers will still confuse us. We will reach the end and be even more mixed up from when we started our question. And that is OK. If our answer received drives us to ask even more questions, we will continue to learn and grow. No one has all the answers. A passage of scripture has quite an impact:

Acts 17:11 (NLT)
11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

Here we see of all the people of whom you would want to trust to have all the answers were Paul and Silas, yet their message was checked against the standard of the scriptures to see if it was validated by the scriptures themselves.

We will certainly give every question chosen our best answer–and I hope we can continue discussions in other various forms such as our small groups or other opportunities for learning.

It is not too late to email or text questions to the staff. We are up and running on this week’s question which is:

“How do we know the Bible is real? Are there really 10 or so people that got together and wrote it?” The sermon as all of them will be on our web page, podcast for you who are interested.

When its ready, we will put it on our Youtube site and possibly this blog. Thanks go out to Brandon Downs, our worship band’s drummer. And also thanks to Chase Gentes, our Worship Pastor and media expert.bdsmall
