How To Reach Your Neighbor

“The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people.Gilbert K. Chesterton

How do we reach our neighbors in the name of Jesus? In light of our current situation where we hardly even know our neighbors, how can we even think of approaching them with religious information, when we don’t know them by name? Here is a 3 step plan to help us reach them.

1. You must get to know them. There are many ways in which one can meet your neighbors. The best way is to just walk over and introduce yourself, bringing a small tray of cookies if they are new to the neighborhood. Maybe an invitation to a cookout at your house would be an excellent informal way to get to know them. Or if you children are about the same age—take advantage of the next birthday party and invite the family, not just the kids.

2. Invite your neighbors to do something with you, like take all the kids to the park or go out to eat. Have you noticed their activities by way of their toys? Do they ride bikes or motorcycles or jog or work on their lawns? Asking questions about their hobbies will thrill them that you are interested in their pursuits and it will lead to friendship.

3. Pray for your neighbors. Yes, rather simple, but it can be so effective. It is hard to ignore someone or avoid someone when you are praying for them. God will move their hearts and open circumstances for interaction. Now when those doors open—please do not hesitate. Just thank the Lord and walk on in—you may win a friend to Jesus.

Finally, remember your neighbor is not just the person who lives right beside you. It may be a co-worker or the lady who does your hair, or even your boss. Be praying for those with whom you have contact. Enlarge your circle of friends and you can enlarge your influence in Christ.

Prayer Points for the Day

1. Pray for your neighbor and their family

2. Pray that God will open doors to meet them.

3. Thank the Lord for your friends—both current and the new ones to come.
