“The second command is equally important”
“It’s dejavu all over again.” Yogi Berra
We have arrived at the second command in our original text from Mark 12. For the new Christian the question might be asked about the need to obey every single commandment found in the Bible. It is difficult to deal with that question in a single devotional thought. But let me add immediately—we are asked to be obedient to God’s commands. However, we need to understand the context of that command as to where it is found, who it is reference to and its place in the New Testament church today. I am not trying to parsec God’s word into segments of what I want to obey verse what I don’t want to obey. Rather, I am using good sound Biblical exegesis to discover where I must look to find the commands that God intend for me.
Commandments are instructive. They keep in shape in our Christian walk. They draw us closer to God. They enable us to become witnesses for Him. They serve to keep us safe; keep us saved; and keep us serving. And God’s commands are not difficult to obey. His word tells us:
1 John 5:3 (NLT)
3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
So, if we want to express love to our Lord with our hearts, soul, mind and strength—we must keep His commands. Others in seeing our example will see God working and living within us, developing our character to shine for all to see—the glory of God.
